Speaking numbers isn’t as easy for me as speaking words. But if I am careful and honest when communicating with them- numbers can reveal massive truths that words or behavior sometimes can’t.
Here’s one truth I want to know:
Is there more child sexual abuse happening in Utah than in the U.S. overall? From my lived experience, hearing others’ experiences, and learning the cultural risk factors and some statistics- I strongly suspect that there is.
The numbers below, might help reveal this truth:
I compared similar data, over a similar time period (as close as I could find), and it appears that reported cases of child sexual abuse in Utah are nearly three times as high as the number of reported cases nationally.
The graphs below tell us that:
From 2011-2015 in Utah, 25.5% of all reported cases of child maltreatment were cases of child sexual abuse
From 2009-2013 nationally, 9.22% of all reported cases of child maltreatment were cases of child sexual abuse.
